In the United States, mass shootings have become a common occurrence with them happening almost daily while some days have multiple events. Sadly, only the more tragic ones take the national news with the latest happening in Orlando, FL. Since that event there have been half a dozen more mass shootings with no hope of them slowing down. Solutions proposed at preventing mass shootings range from allowing less guns to allowing more guns.
Limiting the types of guns allowable for purchase and expanding the lists of people disallowed to own guns is one attempt to reduce gun numbers. Many people feel that limiting guns by type is a violation of Constitutional rights, even if the gun types limited are only useful for killing humans. Hunting and shooting ranges are the two main reasons for continuing to allow all types of guns, while a third reason usually revolves around having guns to fight the government if necessary, even though the military has more advanced weaponry than citizens can obtain.
Support for allowing more guns points to cases where mass shootings were prevented or limited by someone incapacitating the shooter and preventing them from causing more harm. However, allowing more guns in more places could lead to increased random acts of violence. Putting in laws allowing for exceptions to gun free areas for approved persons could be beneficial to prevent that area from becoming a potential target.
Almost every other advanced country has gun laws stricter than the U.S. The amount of mass shootings these countries experience is far less than the US has, even though per capita they seem higher. This puts the US in the lead of mass shootings along with gun violence in high-income nations.
Criminals or terrorists who want to acquire guns will always find a way to get them. We need to ensure the law abiding rational people are allowed to own and carry guns as opposition to them. It is impossible and illegal to disarm all citizens and any attempt to do so will cause a heavy backlash.
We need a mix of new gun control laws and a way to allow law abiding citizens to freely carry to dispel potential shooters. It’s stupid that we have people with so little regard for life that they feel the need to take it from others. Preventing mass shootings will never be 100 percent possible, but everything we can do to prevent them from happening should be a priority.
