Sovereign Citizens Civil Disobedience

Sovereign Citizens MovementNonviolent civil disobedience was historically used by people like Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr to successfully bring important rights and freedoms to people who were not fortunate enough to have them. While civil disobedience can be necessary, there are some who would use it to just cause problems for their own enjoyment and with no real benefit to society. Some of these people, who refer to themselves as sovereign citizens, seem intent on believing that laws  don’t apply to them and that at every opportunity they must make it known and make things difficult for stupid reasons.

Sovereign citizens use civil disobedience as an excuse to not have to answer to authoritative figures as a show of resistance to laws. If stopped while driving and asked for proper documents they claim they have the right to travel unimpeded. That is true, it is a right, but by being in the state and country, you are bound by the laws that govern operating a vehicle. As a driver your rights to simply travel and not be questioned end since you are in control of a vehicle which is a privilege not a right.

Taxes are also a big issue with them even though they are important to help support infrastructure and integral services in the country. While they refuse to pay taxes and provide reasons why they aren’t obliged to, they have no problem taking aid money from the government that come from taxes of other citizens. Taxes are a necessity in a civilized society since they give many services including fire, paramedic, and police help.

Lawsuits and judgments are regularly filed against people from the Sovereign Citizens Organization which almost never have any true legal basis. Dismissal of these frivolous lawsuits is difficult since the pages can number in the thousands, and they must be combed over in detail by lawyers to make sure nothing is missed. This creates a lot of time and effort in dismissing the simplest of lawsuits. Due to their constant legal scare tactics, the are referred to as “paper terrorists.”

Sovereign citizens attempt to differentiate the person and the individual. They believe a person is only what is on paper and makes the government money. The individual is the actual being and deserves the freedoms, not the person. They seem to want all the benefits of a government, but none of the responsibilities of one.
