I completely agree humans are short sighted and selfish. I am one of those people who gives to society. I write open source software, I am the courteous one in rush hour traffic, I am the one who bails out work colleagues fixing their problems when they don't take my advice. Yet daily I see developers using my code but not giving back help fixing bugs but complaining, other cars not following social rules such as 1 car in/out swapping lanes and cutting me up in SUVs, and contempt for suggesting an idea that does not seem popular within a group because of lack of familiarity (yet solves the problem far quicker by analysis)* *my productivity is amongst the highest in the development team on a completed task basis. It pains me that people do not understand because of their pride, their greed, and do not realise that to better yourself you need peer review and to accept factually backed information (even if it contrary to your belief), and you need to give back to society so they too can benefit from your newly found wisdom and experience.
